B5. Location Notes

The panel was located in a field of improved sheep pasture in SE sloping terrain on the SW shoulder of Soutra Hill at 370m asl. The Dere Street Roman Road runs through the field 200m E of the panel, Soutra Ailse Medieval Hospital is situated 500m to the N, and the B6368 lies 2m to the N. The panel was found lying embedded in turf beside the wire fenceline at the N side of the field. The stone may have been moved to its position during field clearance, or possible during the excavation of a drainage ditch under the B6368 road as there was a large drainage pipe 2m to the E. The field also contained two large clearance cairns, and many other stones had been cleared to the N fenceline. In 2005, a cup and ring marked stone (Soutra 1, Canmore 276641, ScRAP 264) was ploughed up from the field 200m to the E (at NT 4530 5800) and subsequently claimed as Treasure Trove by the National Museums Scotland (CO.TT.157/15). A bronze spearhead (Canmore 54537) was found at NT 45001 58002 150m to the N of Soutra 2.

C5. Panel Notes

This is a small, roughly circular and slightly domed a sandstone boulder measuring 0.3 x 0.3m, and 0.2m high, weighing 14.85kg. The convex upper face is carved with a central cup, 6cm in diameter, surrounded by two concentric rings with widths of 5 and 9cms. The inner ring is a penannular, whereas the outer ring is complete and has a an outer diameter of 20cms. The motif has 2 radial grooves, one running from the cup to the outer ring and the second one positioned at 220 degrees from the first and running from the inner penannular to the edge of the panel, bisecting the outer ring. A thin incised line that runs parallel to the first radial may be a plough mark scratch.Overall, the motif covers most of the surface face of the boulder. Peck marks could be seen in the cup and rings.

C6. Probability
