B5. Location Notes

The panel is located on the E side of the valley between Keltneyburn and Tummel Bridge / Braes of Foss (B847), about 300m directly to the E of Glengoulandie Farm and caravan park. It is situated uphill of an area of new forestry plantation (mixed), on a slightly raised knoll in open, unimproved pasture and about 15m downhill of a N-S running stone wall and fence. A line of pylons (Beauly-Denny) runs along the glen at approximately the same elevation as the outcrop. The panel is overlooked by the immediate hills surrounding Glengoulandie, and there are clear views along the valley and notably towards the peak of Schiehallion to the W. Hut circles, a cairn, historic structures, military sites and possibly other rock art (not recorded) are found in the surrounding area.

Previous Notes

NN 77093 52434 350m E of Glen Goulandie Farm in unimproved pasture at 330m OD an outcrop bears 18 cup marks. George Currie, 2008

A rapid walkover survey was carried out in advance of a proposed forestry plantation. Features and monuments recorded in both the NMR and local SMR were checked on the ground and recommendations made for those that should be excluded from the plantation. A line of thirteen stone and turf built grouse butts were recorded on the slopes of Meall Dubh Mor. Information from Oasis (derekhal1-117291) 11 September 2012

C5. Panel Notes

This is a large, irregular outcrop measuring 3.6 x 2.4m, with a maximum height of 0.7m on the SW and flush with the ground along its N and E sides. The surface slopes variably to the N and E, and numerous cracks and natural pits and hollows are present across the panel. The rock type is hard with a coarse grain (probable schist), with visible quartz and other inclusions over a rough surface. Carvings are concentrated along the N and W end of the panel, on the flat upper section of the outcrop, and comprise at least 20 probable cups, one of which may have a single ring, and 3 large oval depressions, which may have radials formed from enlarged natural grooves. The motifs are all highly eroded.

C6. Probability

The probability that there is any rock art on the panel is Definite

Comments

Very eroded, precise numbers not obvious during recording or from 3D model. At least one of the cups may have a single ring.
