B5. Location Notes

Positioned at the lowest point of Kilmartin Glen in flat fields approximately 80m to the north-west of the Kilmartin burn and 250m to the south-east of Temple Wood stone circles (Canmore ID: 39504; 39517) is a monument comprising of multiple standing stones (Canmore ID: 39471). Three of these standing stones have been decorated with cup and cup and ring motifs including the NW stone, the central stone, and the SE stone. The linear monument runs SW to NE and can be found in a field on the W side of the B 8025 road just before it meets the A 816 to the NE of the site. 500m to the SW is Ri Cruin cairn (Canmore ID: 39456); 250m to the WNW are the stone circles at Temple Wood (Canmore ID: 39504) and 300m to the N is Nether Largie South chambered cairn (Canmore ID: 39460). A public footpath path runs from a small foot bridge across the Kilmartin burn in the east, through the middle of the linear monument directly passing the central standing stone, before continuing west towards the Temple Wood stone circles. At the time of survey the field was in use for sheep grazing and the vegetation was low around the monument.

C5. Panel Notes

The panel is one of three standing stones within the grouping of standing stones at Nether Largie which is decorated with cup, or cup-and-ring markings. The panel is the stone furthest to the NW in the grouping. The NW standing stone measures 2.5 along the longest axis of the carved face, which is the upright SW-oriented face of the stone. This surface measures 1.6 m across and 0.3 in thickness (given as the height in the dimensions for the stone). As it is an upright stone, the carved face is at approximately 90 degrees to the ground. The panel is marked by long, linear fissures running vertically and horizontally across its surface. The motifs comprises a group of 4 cupmarks arranged in a diamond formation lying in the lowest section of the stone, offset to the S from the centre. It is possible that the motifs were carved before the stone was used in this setting, and thus the panel may not be in its original location.
