B5. Location Notes

The panel is situated on the N facing side of a rocky ridge running NW-SE in improved pasture with arable land beyond, sloping very slightly to the SW. From the NW end the ridge joins another running W almost to touch the N-S field wall. The ridge itself is heavily covered in gorse, bramble and bracken with some birch and other trees. The panel is about halfway along the ridge, 50m from the SE end and 50m from the electricity pole at the NW end. As described previously, it is 90m S of the field wall to the N of the field and about 100, SE of the NS wall. There is a birch tree beside the panel on its S side. There are other carved panels on the same ridge, the closest being ScRAP 903/948 (Canmore 79071). This panel was originally recorded by Morris as Castleton 1 and van Hoek as Castleton 1A, and there is a duplicate record (ScRAP 1338) from the Stirling HER.

C5. Panel Notes

This is part of a larger sandstone outcrop, at ground level in the E, dropping about 8m to the foot of the ridge at its W end. The carvings are on the only smooth area of the outcrop, extending to 2.4m on its longest EW axis, and 1.7m in width. There are 5 very weathered cup and ring marks. Four of these are grouped and touching each other at the W end of the panel, the other on its own at the E end. The largest motif has 5 rings, each of the others has 3 rings. One of the motifs touches the edge of the panel, thereby cutting off the rings. In the centre there is a possible ring and cup or a circular area of peck marks. The 3D model also shows other possible ring marks and peck marks.

C6. Probability

The probability that there is any rock art on the panel is Definite
